Canesten Thrush Combi Internal & External Creams is a complete treatment for vaginal thrush, targeting both the internal cause and external symptoms to provide comprehensive relief.

Internal cream:

  • Active substance: clotrimazole (10% w/w).
  • Other ingredients: benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetostearyl alcohol, isopropyl myristate, cetyl palmitate, purified water.

External cream:

  • Active substance: clotrimazole (2% w/w).
  • Other ingredients: benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol, purified water.

See full patient information leaflet (PIL).

Please refer to patient information leaflet.

The Internal Cream:

Insert the cream as high as possible into the vagina, preferably before going to sleep for convenient and comfortable treatment.

Wash your hands before removing the foil from the blister pack and again after use.

  1. Remove the applicator from packaging. With the cap in place, insert the tip of the plunger into the applicator (about 1cm).
  2. Twist and pull to remove the cap. Avoid pressing the plunger until the applicator is inserted to prevent wasting cream.
  3. Gently insert the applicator as deep as comfortable into the vagina (best when lying on your back with knees bent). Holding the applicator in place, slowly press the plunger until it stops to deposit the pre-measured dose.
  4. Remove the applicator and dispose of it safely, out of reach of children. Do not flush down the toilet.

It is normal to notice a slight discharge after use; wearing a panty liner may be helpful. This does not indicate ineffective treatment.

The External Cream:

Before use, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end and pressing. Apply thinly and evenly to the area around the vaginal entrance (vulva) 2 or 3 times per day, smoothing in gently.

Symptoms should disappear within three days. If no improvement after seven days, consult your doctor. If infection returns after seven days, another treatment can be used, but see your doctor if you have more than two infections in six months.

Refer to the patient information leaflet for further guidance and pictograms on usage.

Do not use if:

  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to clotrimazole or any other ingredients, including cetostearyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol, in Canesten Thrush Combi Internal & External Creams.
  • During your period, as the product may be less effective.
  • To treat nail and scalp infections.

Speak to a doctor if:

  • You are unsure whether you have thrush or this is the first time you are experiencing these symptoms.
  • You or your partner have a history of sexually transmitted disease.
  • You are under 16 or over 60 years old.
  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to Canesten or other vaginal antifungal products.

Consult your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or blood-stained discharge.
  • Ulcers, blisters, or sores of the vagina or vulva.
  • Lower abdominal pain.
  • Pain or difficulty in passing urine.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Feeling sick or vomiting.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • A foul smelling discharge from the vagina.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Canesten Thrush Combi Internal & External Creams can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying for a baby, consult your doctor or midwife before use. If already advised, follow those instructions carefully.

To treat internal thrush during pregnancy, your doctor may recommend a treatment that can be inserted without an applicator, such as a clotrimazole pessary.
